I have just parted company with my old Stuart Turner inboard and I am not sure I can afford a new inboard replacement. Has anyone any experience/advice concerning use of outboards with an H23? In particular:

Is it possible?

Minimum hp necessary.

Long or short shaft

Problems with transom hung rudder.

Would be grateful for any advice tips.

Hi Peter

I too have a Halcyon 23 which i bought recently without an inboard. Mine has an outboard well to the rear of the cockpit, just in from of the tiller.

I manage to push her along quite comfortably with a 4HP short shaft yamaha and have not experienced any conflict with the rudder, that said i can see there could be issues if mounting an outboard on a block on teh transom.
Hope this helps.

The H23 I have came with a longshaft 5HP honda four stroke that was hung on a transom mounted bracket. The engine pushed the boat along OK when it was calm but once in a swell the prop regularly came out of the water allowing the engine to rev and surge forward when it dropped back in the water. The transom flexed massively when this happened!!! I've since got the old Albin inboard going and will be using that when the boat goes back in the water. I've kept the outboard bracket and now have an old 4hp johnson as a back up for the reportedly unreliable inboard Albin.

If you go with a transom bracket then back it up with a large sturdy piece of ply on the inside of the transom to spread the load.

Cant the old inboard be restored?

No problems with transom hung rudder.

When my inboard expired I had a johnson 4 longshaft hung off the transom  ok in calm waters but no good agaist a running east coast tide or swell,

tried a saildrive extra long saft 9hp still had problems with swells and comming out of the water, strenghened the transom to take it  but bent several outboard brakets from side on waves

now have a a volvo inboard  23hp with a 15 inch prop  11deg pitch no problems and a Joihnson 6 longshaft just in case

good sailing
