Hello,
I was delighted to find your web site recently and would like to post a query.
My so far limited experience with 'Southern Cross', a Halcyon 27 came to the fore this spring when with the wieght of three grown men in the cockpit we were rather suprised to find sea water coming up the cockpit drain. At the time we were sailing fast on a broad reach under full main and the big genoa. The freeboard astern was only a few inches.
When only two are in the cockpit the problem is less so, and on my own not at all. Even with the three it need not get dangerous but we are off to Holland soon and I would appreciate any comments or advice.
The boat carries the excellent though heavy Sabb 8 h.p. All heavy equipment like spare anchors and chain were stowed right forward under the forward berths at the time.
Thank you for your consideration or similar experiences.
    Richard

Hi Richard,
Are your cockpit drains criss-crossed so that when your boat is heeled the drain outlet is raised?

      Hi Sawdoc,
I thank you but having been out again and had another good look it seems that all is well after all. The single drain is set to starboard and at the cockpit end isn't far above the outside water level. Although it was a bit suprising at first with three of us in the cockpit, actually the physics is sound and the effect completely satisfactory. Simple really (like me sometimes) but at least all concerned are quite happy about it.
  Thanks again though. Richard.

Its a few years since I had my H27. The water always came up the drain when the stern tucked down.

The stern went down when motoring fast, and in certain sailing conditions.

I guess the cockpit floor was near water level. No significant problem, as long as the cockpit sole was well screwed down. (36 screws if I remember)
