Is there anyone out there that has done this and can advise. My first issue is what engine? I was thinking of a 10hp Yanmar or Beta, any thoughts or better alternatives?

Regards

Gus

Hi Angus,

My boat came already re-engined. They had fitted a Beta 20HP which seems to fit well into the engine bay.

Unfortunately I cannot give first hand advice on the fitting but only mention that the beta is a great engine and the extra horsepower is good in heavy weather as I can get 7knts even going to wind in a F5.

Hello,

I am considering to have a new Yanmar 2YM15 - KM2P-1 installed.
That engine generates 14HP. The original SABB had 8HP.

There used to be a time sail boats had to do it without engines.
I don't intend to have my Nomad, a Halcyon 27 Clipper, pulling water skiers but when I see other boats of similar dimensions install engines generating more as 20HP I wander if the 14HP-Yanmar will suit the Nomad best.
The 14HP Yanmar was advised to easy maneuvering in the harbor.

The other option would be (if it fits) the Yanmar 3YM20 that generates 22HP. Would that be an overkill or suit better rough waters and wild currents? Maybe that one is the better option for upstream trips and all circumstances waters in general?

I stick to Yanmar because it's a famous brand and the dealer is around the corner.

Any thoughs? Every advice and comment is welcomed.

Have a nice day,
Nomad

I have since starting this thread decided on a BETA 16hp which I believe will be more than enough. I am very sparing in my use of engines but believe this will serve me well in and around marinas/harbours. The boat is currently with the boatyard to have it fitted despite the credit cruch.

Thank you for the feedback.

I just ordered the Yanmar 2YM15 -KM2P-1 providing 14hp.
In doing so I followed the advice of the former owner of my boat.
The salesman openly said that he was to supposed to sell the biggest engine possible but that according to calculations the 14hp was what the boat needs.

The Yanmar dealer is 200 meter from the boat and it's a famous brand and a type that receives good comments on the Net. Thus I didn't feel it was needed to look really into other alternatives. Decision made.

Maybe grace to the credit crunch I got a nice reduction too.
It's maybe safer too to spend some cash on a good piece of equipment as to keep it in a bank nowadays...

Ross,

In 2000  I re-engined with a 13.5 hp beta marine jobby.

Excellent engine, with fresh water cooling.

Fitting was doen by out local engineers, I did hear the odd swaer word from the engine bay! Took a bit of grinding down of the engine bearers to get it to fit.

The prop and shaft stayed the same, and was a great success.

The by product of the engine change was that the Beta was sunstantially lighter than the old Bukh. This improved the sailing performance downwind quiet noticably.

If you look at my webpage http://www.markjohnsonafloat.org.uk and click on 'The year of the engine' you can read the full account.

The engineers fees were only £600, but thta was n9 nyears ago. I think I paid £2000 for the new engine. Probably a bit more now!!

Good luck.

I am considering re-engining my H27 this year (if I can't successfully service the old Sabb).  Was considering Beta (around 16 hp) as there is a local dealer.  Can anyone give me some idea of cost fitted?

Also is it possible to retain the variable pitch arrangement with the new engine or is it not worth it?

I too am thinking a new engine is in order, we had the Sabb's gearbox seize in full ahead pitch this year which caused some excitement coming alongside.

The general consensus is that the Beta 14 or Yanmar 14 are fine, anything else is overkill.  The trouble is the price.  The engines are around £3k with Boat Show prices, but fitting is another £3k.  This is partly due to the Sabb's variable pitch propellor which apparently can't be re-used with anything else.

Where are you located?

David

Thats a bit of bad news £3k for fitting!  That's what I was worried about, a friend at our boat yard fitted a new (to him) engine in his recently aquired Invicta and it didn't look a particularly easy job mainly in the construction of engine mountings and getting all the angles & height right.

David I live in Blackpool and the boat is kept in Lytham on a creek off the Ribble (Ribble Cruising Club).  Mud bearths, good hard standing and the club has it's own facilities for launching.

Dear David,

My Halcyon Clipper is being refitted with a Yanmar 2YM15 -KM2P-1 providing 14hp. Price for the engine and the shaft only: 6000 Euro. Installing these items is included. Not included is the polyester work: add about an other 4000 Euro. The propel will be an other cost. It all comes with warranty and is done by an official Yanmar dealer. The boat is located in Flanders (Belgium).

I was told as well that the costs were going up because the Sabb's past-time technology could not be recycled: if you change the engine you need to update the engine system. As a bonus you get a good source of a more powerful electrical system as well "for free" :-)
